I just finished watching Montage of Heck, the new documentary on HBO about Kurt Cobain. I have been a huge fan of Nirvana since I was about 13, so I was interest in how this film would project him.
I have to say that it did not disappoint. It showed him as a child growing up and then after his parents divorced and how that affected him. Then of course it showed the rise of Nirvana and the decline of Kurt over the years. For me his decline was hard for me to watch because it put me back into my teenage years watching my mom struggle with her drug abuse. Thankfully there was not much of him nodding off because of the drugs because I don’t know if I could have handled watching it. Though I am glad that they did show some of it so that you could see the struggle he went through before his death. It really shows the beast that drug addiction is. I think that this film may also make someone else who is struggling with addiction reconsider their life choices.
This documentary is available on HBO now and is over 2 hours long, but well worth the time. There is some nudity (thanks Courtney) and obvious drug use so I would skip watching this one until after the kids go to bed. In addition to old videos of Kurt there is also a lot of interviews with old girlfriends, band members and even his family and Courtney love which was a shock to me because I heard they wouldn’t be on this movie.
In all, I loved this movie. Even if you are not a fan of Nirvana, the art and writing from Kurt in between scenes was really incredible. It really showed the unique person that Kurt was.
