budget, money

My 6 week spending FREEZE- and other horror stories

Ok, that is literally the scariest image I have ever had to made for my site. EVER.
TLK spending freeze
First a little back story, I love shopping, I love Target, and most importantly I love spending money. That being said I am absolutely terrible with money, both with spending it all and with budgeting it. Which is basically how we got to here.

John finished our taxes yesterday, unlike many years before when the government owed us thousands of dollars this year we owe them thousands of dollars. It goes without saying that I haven’t saved any money at all to go towards taxes because I was living on hopes and dreams that we would somehow break even or heck even get money back. Boy was I wrong.

We owe: $2611

Bottom line. I can’t spend for at least 6 weeks in order for us to have enough money to pay this off by the April 15 due date.

Heres how our budget will have to work in order for us to be able to pay the taxes and not have any late fees on our taxes.

I will have $100 to spend on food each week (we already spend this amount give or take a few bucks).

I will have $60 every two weeks for gas and any car related needs.

I will have $30 for prescriptions.

I will have $60 for any household needs. (Toiletries, cleaners, etc)

This all seems totally doable.

A few things I will have to cut back on are:

  • Target (cries)
  • Starbucks trips
  • Online shopping trips.
  • Walgreens.
  • Eating out.

I plan on avoiding Target all together because honestly I can’t step foot into that place without Starbucks in my hand and I can’t leave without a minimum of a $60 purchase. I also will be making no more trips to Walgreens unless I need medicine and if I do I will have to fight the urges to buy everything in sight, and if I do not have something that I need for dinner I WILL NOT be running to Walgreens to pick up whatever I needed. I will be cooking EVERY SINGLE DAY, to save on fast food.

I will be checking in every single week to show you how I managed to pull this off….

  1. So sorry you owe money, but I am encouraging in your challenge. You can do it. We did a no spend January and February several years ago, and it was a blessing beyond our dreams. Cheering you on and looking forward to your updates!

  2. Sorry to hear about your tax bill. You can do this! I’ve done month-long spending freezes and the first thing I cut out is Target. I always spend more than I plan to when I shop there. It works! as much as I dreaded the spending freeze, it was a good lesson, finding out I could live on less than I thought I could.

    1. Thanks for the encouragement. I know personally I am trying to talk my self into a quick visit to Target for the few things that I need and I have to keep telling myself that I promised that I wouldn’t.

  3. MY weakness is the garden shop at Ace Hardware.(Its spring in Florida). I spent $145 today and all I went in to buy was a few bags of dirt and a few plants. I need a freeze on shopping there.

  4. I’m on a spend-freeze myself at the moment, and can’t allow myself to fork out for anything other than food, medication, and vet bills for probably the next 6 months or so. It’s hard, but I just keep telling myself that it’s a good learning experience, and i’ll appreciate things more once I do have disposable income again. Good luck!! And stay away from Target (i’ve stopped going to the mall altogether because it’s too depressing)!
