Every since I started this blog back in 2007 and really embraced social media I have been “over sharing”. So I knew that whenever my kids got old enough to really use their cell phones to access the internet I knew that I need to teach them the correct way to share things online without giving out too much information, or sharing things that shouldn’t be share. Essentially I wanted my kids to live a life online similar to the ones that they live offline. I wanted them to post positive, happy things online without sharing TOO much private information.
The hardest part of that was for me to be able to really teach them without sound too preachy, I wanted to inform them without scaring them. One thing that worked for us was for me to share with them some of the things that I share online hoping that they would in turn share with me. Before I knew it the kids were sharing things that both their friends and themselves shared online. Not only were they sharing positive things online, but they were sharing it with me!
You know as well as me that today’s families use digital technology in every aspect of life from gaming, to learning and socializing to even shopping (my favorite). The nonstop access to technology is amazing and it really opens so many opportunities to kids, but like everything in life you need to learn to make safe decision while using it.
The National PTA has partnered with LifeLock to help share some great ways that families can start an open and ever evolving conversation about making positive and safe decisions while using technology. As I said, technology can be a really incredible tool whenever used positively. Everyone benefits whenever you #ShareAwesome!
The #ShareAwesome campaign helps to build an understanding between parents and students to help build the skills we need to be safe and positive online are similar to what you need offline. #ShareAwesome celebrates students and families who use digital media and tool for good, for themselves, their family, their friends and the whole world! The #ShareAwesome contest invites social media users to share a smart and safe decision, positive accomplishment, or positive action for the good of others using hashtag #ShareAwesome on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook pages. Students who enter a photo between September 15 – November 30, 2014 will be eligible to win fantastic prizes, including tablets and a $2,500 scholarship! Visit ShareAwesomeNow.org to learn more.
