So I waited for months for my turn to check out Fifty Shades of grey from my local library (via ebook of course). Listening to everyone fuss over this book, not being able to talk about the book because I haven’t read it yet. Finally it was my turn to read it! I had heard mixed things about the book, good and bad reviews, but I wanted to read it myself just to see what the fuss is about. Espeically now that there is some talks about a possible movie.
Ill be honest, I was deeply let down by this book. Im not sure exactly what I was expecting, but it wasn’t this. About a quarter of the way through it I realized I just wasn’t getting into the book. Though I powered through it, all the way to the end. Most of it was pretty expected with the exception of one part… towards the end, in the bathroom. YIKES. Thats all Im going to say, in case you have not read it.
Some things that irked me about this book:
- The over use of words/sayings. For example, Mr. Grey tells Anastasia at least 100 times not to bite her lip or else. Or when Anastasia describes certain feelings she describes as her “inner goddess”
- The fact that Mr. Grey is quite the nut job. No seriously, she cant touch him?!
- Anastasia refuses to accept any gifts from him, even the Audi. The whole book I felt like saying accept these gifts as payment for the fact that the guy you’re dating is a totally emotionally messed up jerk! Seriously!
I most surprised by the lack of content. There were quite a few adult scenes, actually I think at least 90% was adult content. I expected that, but there wasn’t enough story line to make it all make any kind of sense as to why Anastasia put up with Mr. Grey’s weirdness, other than him being hot and rich.
I must see how they plan on making a movie out of this book. I do not plan on reading the other two books, I feel I already invested enough time in this series.

I was disappointed too… Horrible writing, sad sad sad “story line” if you can call it that… Major let down. This may be one of the rare cases that the movie might be better than the book… It’d be hard to be worse

Very true. I just think they would have to make up a LOT of story line to make a movie work. Unless it was a XXX movie. =P

I read all three books. I can’t explain why, but I couldn’t put them down. (Well, I couldn’t put my Kindle down anyway.) I was mad and rolling my eyes the entire time I read them, but I still wanted to know what happened. I don’t care how good looking and rich Christian Grey is, there’s no way I’d put up with that level of emotional instability. But at the same time, I kind of understood Ana’s allure toward him. I understand the idea of becoming infatuated with someone or even falling in love with someone despite all of their baggage. That was the only saving grace in the series for me, because otherwise it was total crap.
The language killed me too. Who uses the word “beguiled” in real life? Even if you’re into classic literature.
But I’ll admit…I imagined Christian as Ryan Kwanten during (most) of the sex scenes and it wasn’t too difficult to power through it.

I had the similar pull to the book. Im not sure why, but I really powered through it mostly because I COULDN’T put it down. I think it was mostly because I was hoping it would get better.
I did notice that I couldnt really put a face to Christian because I couldn’t really relate to the type of person he was supposed to be. I guess if I could have put a face to the name I probably would have enjoyed the book more.

You have described it exactly like I found it. I did however go on to read 2 & 3 but still felt that if you took out some of the repetetive scenes (although I do know we all do it at least twice a day like that in real life) then the whole series could have fitted into 1 large book, and maybe just have scrapped through as sort of alright!

Ha! Oh yeah, twice a day. What gets me is that they did it like non stop. Thats pretty impressive!
I havent read the 2nd and 3rd but Im guessing that you are right about it fitting it all in one book.

I have not read the books yet but I am not sure if I want to read them since I keep hearing mixed review on this book. Maybe once things settle down on my end of the world I might consider it.

THANK YOU! I clicked on your review thinking that this was going to be another review on this book about how great it is. I’m so glad I’m not the only one who didn’t like it. I didn’t buy the book. Instead, I looked it up online and read the first chapter. It is online in several places for free because it was a Twilight fan-fiction submission. I found it to be poorly written and extremely repetitive, so I decided not to buy it. I wasn’t really surprised though, considering I wasn’t a Twilight fan either.

Thanks for the review. I heard a bad review on TV and these books sound pretty creepy, and not kind to women.
