V words and other things

After much procrastination I finally broke down and had the “pre talk” with Jayde. In preparation I picked up a pretty awesome American Girl book (after a recommendation of a twitter friend) that covered just about everything that I needed it to, from teeth to periods.

Whenever I sat down this evening to read it with her, I was fully prepared to talk about breasts and vaginas, knowing that it was not going to be an easy conversation. I sailed through half the book, with only brief questions from her. She just sat and took in all the information. She especially loved learning about nutrition and about breaking habits. She loves learning so much.

Then we reached the dreaded chapter. About lady parts. I took a deep breath and began reading, “going good” I thoughts. I passed the first “V” word, and was fine. Whew. Then I thought “wow this isn’t so bad I can totally do this”. With more confidence I began reading more, until a second “V” word came, like a blow to the stomach I stumbled on my words. Vulva?! Why didn’t anyone warn me that this book was going to go into all that. The first mention of vagina had me blushing. you can only imagine my response to this second word.

To top if off, even though I made it through most of the chapter okay, right at the end she didn’t understand something so I had to go back and reread the entire first two paragraphs that were so traumatic the first time around. I guess no amount of preparation could have really prepared me for this talk. Now I am terrified of “the talk”, which now is really just a matter of time.

If your curious the results of the book… it was amazing, very detailed (which could be a good or a bad thing). There was a ton of really good information, that covers pretty much anything you could possibly need information on.  However, in the end Jayde decided that she doesn’t want to grow up and she’ll just stay 8 forever. Sigh, if only.
